Someone gave me two nice pieces of driftwood with slate attached to the bottoms. It's used, and dried out as it hasn't been used in a while. If he had any fish diseases in his tank, is it possible for them to get into mine? Never used previously used driftwood before. They are old, the wood is kind of scaley looking...

Thanks!

I would give it a good wash with a power hose or something to remove any dust etc, then soak it for a week in a bin or something to make sure anything that may have been stuck to the wood during stotage dies...

Just soak it in water?
Personally, I have never had an issue by just soaking in water, but some people swear by the 10% bleach method. Soak it in a water and bleach mixture with 90% water 10% bleach and let it sit for a while. When its done you have to get all bleach out. thats the part I don't like. making sure all the bleach is out so I don't reek havoc on my fish

I would personally soak it in the hottest water possible, even if you have to boil some of the water. This would put my mind at rest with worrying about the things on the wood. Btw since it was not used in awhile probably will be buoyant even with the slate .

Silicone can withstand temps up to 200 degrees C, I would not recommend you test this in an aquarium setup
