i found a chunk of an old dead tree.. would it be ok to put in tank? or does the piece of wood need to be found in a body of water of some sort? how do you know if wood is 'driftwood'?

thanks

Most "driftwood" found in stores never "drifted". They were dug up after the tree was cut down, then cleaned off, and WAM: driftwood.

If you like the piece you have, soak it in water for an eternity and then you are good to go. Some wood just will never sink so expect to have to weight it down some how. Drill into it from the lower side to allow water penetration and as a place for weights. Use large stainless steel screws as weights.

And make sure it is a hard wood with no bark, if it has bark it is too fresh. Soak it for a couple years!

Nope, it is already "drifting".

If you like it, don't worry what anyone else thinks. I would consider it to have graduated to driftwood.
