i have found some cool driftwood doing this

didn't have any problems with wood from lake huron.

if the wood is small enough you can boil it in a pan of water on the stove to make it safe
i soaked my driftwood for a while in a 150 gallon stock tank that i had and changed the water every day

I clean and wash out side then place it in the shower and run hot water.
