It's typically fungal growth. I've mostly seen it on driftwood that was collected locally, but I've also seen it on driftwood from the store. You can boil it, run it through the dishwasher, or just let it be. Should go away on it's own.

I had it on my wood. Eventually I just took a net to it. It came right off and never grew back.
