Im planning on drilling my tank soon and want to do it from the bottom. Problem is i have heard allot of 55 gallons use tempered glass on the bottom. I bought the tank used but they said they bought it from wal mart. Does anyone know of a way i can tell if it's tempered or not without tearing the whole tank down? I'd hate to tare apart my tank only to find i can't drill it anyway.

Not enough cash to buy a pre drilled.

Can drill from the side but i really wanted to drill the bottom i possible.

I can't get to the bottom glass while my tank is still set up and id hate to tare it down for nothing.

I guess what im looking for is someone who knows allot about what kind of tanks wal mart carries or has carried in the past and can tell me if my tank is probably or probably not tempered.

why the need to drill? there are so many other options that don't end with 55gal on your floor from drilling it yourself

you shouldn't have to tear down the whole tank. on all my tanks the stickers that say the bottom is tempered are close to the two short sides of the tank. but, even if you don't see the stickers i still would be worried about drilling the bottom. every 55 gallon i have seen has a tempered bottom. I have drilled my own tanks on the back at the top. it's pretty simple and safer IMO. less chance of a flood. if something goes wrong the tank can only drain to the bottom of the hole. with the hole in the bottom the whole tank can drain.

Some 55g have tempered front and back too I know one just exploded when I tried to drill it yesterday. The way you tell is reg glass edges are sharper look broken.tempered looks like a machine made edge.I think most bottoms are tempered.

It's called an arris edge, all tempered glass comes that way I think. Pre-drilled is the way to go, but failing that then I'd stay away from the bottom. As was alrady said, a lot of them are tempered simply because of the weight from the water, substrate and features.

Oh, make sure you wear a respirator when drilling, I've seen a couple people end up getting sick from breathing silicate dust.
