I planning on ordering a 225 in a couple weeks. Was planning on getting 2 holes drilled in the back panel that will feed a 55 gallon sump. Where is the optimal location for the holes to be drilled and what diameter should the holes be? Planning on either a mag 18 or two quietone pumps for the return.

Check out glass-holes.com for their overflows. I like them because they don't take up much room but keep the waters surface clean of oils and stuff.

You can also put holes lower if you want to keep the gravel and lower portions of the tank clean. My 360 has a glass-holes over flow and two lower intakes and I love that system. Below is a drawing (not mine) that illustrates the lower hole system. Basically, you can put a hole anywhere you want to draw water from the tank, and turn it into an overflow.

trying to avoid drillin the bottom pannel. Would rather have my holes drilled closer to the top of the bottom panel. I was thinking 4" beneath the top frame and either 1.5" or 2" holes fitted with bulkheads

If that's the case run em Herbie style and put them wherever will suit your setup the best, aesthetically speaking, or wherever they'll be the least intrusive to the overall design of the tank. 1 1/2" drains will give you tons of headroom or future upgrades. talk to your builder about it, because honestly, there are endless possibilities for placement and a good builder will put them anywhere you want.

If you had any ideas for decor, I'd try to place them behind there. I like being able to see into the sides of my tanks without looking at pipes and whatnot, but that's just a personal preference
