ok so i was talkling to thwe guys at the local tank shop and they told me that i must have a drilled tank for a sump and i asked what if its not drilled cant i use a pump to push the water into the tank (AND WE AL KNOW THAT TO USE A SUMP TANK YOU MUST HAVE A PUMP TO PUSH THE WATER BACK INTO THE TANK) the following is the exacty conversationME-- cant i use pvc pip and a pump to fill the sump tank below my tank TANK GUY -- wel uh you could but if the poawr goes out your screwed it needs to constanly run.WELL IF IT NEEDS TO BE RUNNING CONSTANLY IF THE POWER GOES OUT THEN THE PUMP TO PUMP THE WATER BACK INTO THE TANK IT WONT WORK EITHER does anybody else think this is a LITTLE funny

I don't know a whole lot about sumps, but you can use an overflow box instead of drilling. The rest is the same. There are ways to set it up so it won't flood during a poweroutage, but someone else can probably expalin how to do that, cuz I'm not sure how.

yeah they sound like they are trying to get you to buy or are that stupid.

or they could be waiting for you to talk about an over flow box set up i like to call them "retrofitted sump tanks" im working for a name change it just sounds more construction like haha

If the you have a pump filling your sump and one returning water to your tank and the power goes out you are screwed because the pipes filled with water turn into a siphon when the pump doesn't run and drains your tank into your sump, causing it to overflow onto your floor. Pretty sure that's what the guy was talking about.

as long as i wasnt the only one that thought it was funny i personally sdony have a sump yet so i dont really know the prices of them i called the same shop and asked about a 20 gallon sump tank the guy said to make your own just the tank no supplies its 40 bux and i asked what abou a Pre made 20 gallon sump he old me is 299.99 is that a normal price or is it just a hey come spend 300.00 ?

OOH Hey FishBum thats a cool tattoo you have

pre-fab wet/dry filters can be kind of expensive.
the last one i bought (before learninfg how easy they are to make yourself) was a PCA brand, and it ran me close to $200. it came with an overflow (skimmer) box, and hose, but no pump or return plumbing.

for that same $200, you can get a good quality return pump (and a good sized one at that), all the materials to build your sump, and the media. and you will still probably have money left over.

i knew they where exspensive i just dinth think they where that high i would buy a pond filter but its only a 55 gallon i will most likely buy a pond filter for the 240 gallon im getting this summer

Thats the very reason we build PVC overflows for non-drilled tanks. You can build one for any size tank.

EDIT: I've built 4 pvc overflows with DIY sumps for less than $200, including pipe & pumps. Tell that LFS to stick it & start building your own.
