I am new to this. I am hoping to buy a new tank for cichlids in the next week or so. (No reef/ freshwater etc). I have a fluval 2180 filter and would like to use it. Can someone advise if I should buy a drilled tank or not. All I know is that it looks neater because you don't have all the tubes? anything else I need to consider? If I need another pump and they make noise that would be an issue...for example.

thank folks!!

isnt the 2180 an eheim filter? either way, you could do whatever you chose. i beleive your filter is a canister filter, which is made just to mount the hoses on the inside of the tank which in that case, you would not need a drilled tank. you could, however, purchase a drilled tank (which are more expensive, unless your buying a used one) and just buy adapters to hook your hoses up to. also, if you ever decided to use a sump you would already have your drilled tank. i say, its up to you!

Yes it is an eheim canister filter. So I can jsut buy adapters and not need a specific pump? do you know what the adapter are called? or just adapters?
thanks for your help!

yea, do a little searchin on how cansiters work. they have the pump and hold the media inside the canister. i dont own an eheim, but they all work basically the same way. if you buy a drilled tank, you will need to buy some bulkhead fittings. from there, take the bulkhead fittings to lowes or home depot or a place like that (make sure you bring along a piece of the hose so you know what size nipple to get) and just ask for some help finding the right pieces to adapt your bulkhead fittings down to your hoses for your intake and output lines on your canister filters.also welcome to mfk. and if you have anymore questions just ask. this is the place for any questions. these guys/gals on this site are great and love helping others out. its a great place to learn

You don't need an extra pump, there is a pump inside your canister that does the work for you. Try googling an eheim 2180 user manual if you don't have it already. You don't need a drilled tank for the canister to work.

edit: this will give you a general idea of how a canister works. couldn't find an eheim vid in english but this is similar.
