Drilling a running tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've never had any experience whatsoever with drilling a tank, but i know i read somewhere that drilling laminated glass is a no no.
Just thought i'd throw it out there for ya to look into, like i said, no personal experience here, just somethin i read so take it for what its worth lol

it seems that drilling laminated glass is much the same as drilling normal glass, I am more concerned about drilling a running tank as I do not want to pull down a stocked tank.

Is it worth the risk or does someone know where I can find an overflow box that will fit over a 2.5 inch tank brace?

i had the same problem with my tank. the braces were to big for a CPR overflow. i have drilled the top of my tank while it was running. wasn't a problem at all. some of the ground glass got into the tank and it turned the water cloudy but i left my circulation pumps off to protect their seals until the water cleared up and it wasn't a problem.
i also just recently drilled the side of my tank. it was empty and i drilled from inside it but it's the same idea as what you are talking about. i just had my daughter dripping water onto the holesaw at the glass with a piece of ridge airline tubing and a syringe full of water. i cut through 3/4" glass twice that way.
if i were you i'd drop the tank water level, put tape on the inside glass and just go for it. worse case the glass cracks or shatters and there is a ton of water all over the floor..... there is always a risk so you need to think about what would you do if.... but i'd do it and i have, kind of.
but one thing- i don't know if you can drill laminated glass. i would definately check on that first.
