I have a piece of half-inch thick live rock that I want to drill a hole through and insert a 1" diameter PVC/ABS tube through.

I don't have my own drill...

I could borrow a drill, but are there any other options to make the hole using other non electric common toolbox equipment?

Any tips if I actually use a drill?

I know there is no 1" drill bit for a handheld drill, but could I drill lots of small holes and bash out the rest?

1" masonry bit...shouldn't be a problem, put a 6" deep hole in my slab with one.

THK Diamond Tools is in Hong Kong, so maybe they will give you a break on the shipping. They normally have drill bits that are half the cost of the one in this link. You might want to ask them if they can still get the cheaper ones. Btw, their cheaper ones are really good quality too. I have been really happy with everything I bought from THK.
