I have brought a used fish tank to house some stingrays! ((: I've been umming and arring about drilling it so I can use a sump, give me some advise PLEASE!! The tank is 6x2x2 and is 12mm thick, Is this drillable? Has anyone drilled a 12mm thick used tank before? Also is possible I would be interested in paying someone to do this for me as I have no clue about drilling tanks.. Is there anyone in the Northamptonshire area who would be willing to do this? Or is there professional glass drilling people? Thanks for taking your time to read and massive thanks for any information given!!!!

It is certainly drillable. Contact a local glazier or tank maker, they should be able to come do it for a fairly reasonable price, cheaper if you can take the tank to them.
Thanks for the fast reply man, Il have a word with some local tank makers.. im sure il find someone in my area willing to do this for a price! Thanks again! (:

I have drilled maybe 8 tanks, from as small as 20gal, up to 120 gal.
Drilling is unbelievably easy, with the right drill bit, and the thicker the glass, the better.
I use a common electric hand drill
I've only cracked 1 tank, and it was a 20 gal, with thin glass, and I tried to drill too fast.
MFK member uarujoey has a youtube video on how to do it, and is where I learned.
You basically decide what size overflows (bulkheads)you want for your tanks, buy that size diamond drill bit and go to it (jehmco has a sizing sidebar).
I made a template out of a junk piece of wood, put a hole the size of your drill bit, and clamp it to the tank.

Run water over the glass, while drilling. This keeps the glass cool and prevents cracking

and in about a minute you have a nice clean hole.

I have drilled tanks standing in their normal position, or standing on end, half full, or empty.
I bought the drill bit from jehmco, they have many sizes and choices.
I bought the more expensive one to fit 1.4" PVC piping, because I plan on drilling about 20 tanks over time.
