I built a diy overflow because i was told that bulkheads look ugly and did not get the tank drilled when i bought it.
People tell me that the overflow pipe looks ugly
It will be a pain to take it to be drilled.
I was thinking of buying an overflow box but i cant find one that will fit a 70mm(2.8inch) tank brace.
i dont have the tools to make one, is getting it drilled my best/cheapest option also i dont like the noise of the overflow
Should i get it drilled?

if you feel brave enough you can drill it yourself. I am thinking of drilling my 220 because of the pipes being in the tank. but if you paint them black and your background is black it actually doesnt look all that bad. As far as the noise put a cap, with a 1/8" hole in top, and put that over the vent pipe.

I didn't want to drill my tank at first either. Kinda scary! Practiced on a couple 10 gallons first to get the feel for it. The thinner the glass, the more fragile it is.

Get a good diamond hole saw, some plumbers putty, water, and some patience and go to town. glass-holes.com has some great info on drilling.

I think the important question should be "What do you think?" Don't worry about what other people think unless they are paying the bills (or your wife :grinyes: ). If you are ok with the looks of the DIY overflow, then why change. You can paint it if you haven't already to make it less conspicuous.

chompers thats probly the best answer- who realy cares what other people think.
It does the job.
It skimms the surface off of the top of the water and it is clean.
and i think i dont think i care anymore what other people think.

i would just paint the pipes black, and make it less noticebale

Side note; I know this has been answered before <Somewhere> but what paint do you use when painting PVC that is going to be submerged in the tank?
