Drinking Straw

Hi,

I can't seem to get kaldness here to make a moving bed filter. However I am planning to use cut drinking straw as an alternative. Is it possible to use cut straw as a moving bed filter? Can BB strive in it?

my thought is that the straws would be too light to move anywhere except floating on top. Maybe once they are colonized they may move around better in the water column. Some people use them in their sumps so they should definately be able to house bacteria.

Yes it floats and it moves from bottom to top when there is current in the water. So what I did was put it in my sump and let the flow move them.

Yeah but all my bioballs sink though hehe.. doesn't have time to look for bioballs that floats.

i think you can use ceramics media like the stuff marineland makes might work. you just have to wait for the media to be colonized i think,im not exactly sure though
and if you just want something to remove nitrates you can try this
