I’m getting ready to set up the 260 I just picked up. That said when we built the wall of the room it’s going on I had the contractor install a line for me to overflow the drip system. The line is about 14” up on the wall. My sump is 20” tall. I’m worried there isn’t enough of a grade to overflow the used water. What do you think?
Should I drill an overflow in the main tank since it’s much higher?

It's only a trickle, you don't need a steep run of pipe

Thanks for the reply. Yep. I just don't know if I'll have any have any downhill run on the pipe from the sump. I'm wondering if I can run the overflow out of the display?

I wouldn't run the overflow for the drip from the display.

Sounds like you have 6" to play with. Typically the drain for the drip would be installed in the pump chamber of your sump. What kind of sump do you have? Trickle W/D or full emerged? Will the pump chamber of the sump have at least 15" of water in it? Will any chamber have 15" of water in it?

Either way i would drill the bulkhead low in the sump and use a riser/stand pipe to adjust where you want the water level to be.

The overflow needs to be in container that is in the lowest placement.

So if you have a display tank above your sump, the overflow must come out of the sump, not the display.

Pipes flow better vertically or horizontally. A steep angle actually cuts down on your flow rate. Better to have a horizontal with a 90 degree elbow to a vertical, that a 30 or 40 degree sloping pipe.

The elbow will flow better that the steeply sloped pipe.

I appreciate all the insight. I"m just not sure I have the height in the sump to do it.

I just have the display tank and an empty Sea Clear 100 gallon I was going to use as the sump. The only thing I think I have going for me is the amount of water that would go through the overflow into the sump in the event of a power failure would be relatively small since the footprint is 72x24. There can't be more than 1/2" over the weirs. I'm thinking I can run the sump at a relatively high level then. Does that make any sense?
