With my carbon filter from the local hardware store, is fresh water filtered by just carbon safe for all my beneficial bacteria and fish?

I have a water line tapped on to my carbon filter that drips to my sump.

Yep. Your BB will be fine. With just a standard carbon filter, I'm going to guess you only have chlorine in your water.

Nub question but What else should I filter out in this drip system?

If you have chloramines, you'll need to filter those out. To do that requires a dual stage filter using granular activated carbon (GAC)

I will contact my water company that supplies my city water to see if there is any chloramines in my water. Thanks.

Yup, no chloramines. But there's nothing to say they won't start adding it one day. A $70 investment in a chlorine/chloramine filter is cheap insurance :)

Yup, agreed. I'll sell you on the filter from the Filter Guys just like I did J. haha

I ran without carbon on my drip for 2 years and then one day.....The Filter Guys are saying the carbon blocks last longer than GAC. make sure you get the 1 micron prefilter. I clogged up the first 2 carbon blocks because I left it out. The preflitler is only $3 to replace. It looks like I'm getting 6-8 weeks out of a prefilter. Without it I got about 4 weeks out of the carbon before the flow nearly stopped.

You can add me to your list. It was your post that got me to call them.
