I'm building a wet/dry and need some info please. My flow will be around 390 gph and the drip tray will have 99 holes. Is there a formula for figuring out how big the holes need to be?

Thanks

Well unless you went with really small holes (e.g 1/8) you will have enough flow through the tray. The problem you might run into is to great of flow and have the water only drip through small section of your drip tray. I have had more problems with to much flow then I have had with to little.

What I suggest is this.

Don't set out on a number of holes, just look for even spacing in the wholes and make sure it covers all the tray. Then start with smaller holes, its much easier to increase the size of the whole then it is to decrease the size.

If you end up with to many holes, or the holes are too big you have two options, one put more filter mat over the top to slow the flow. or plug up some holes with silicone.

I might suggest 1/4 holes to start with, the only problem I can see is holes that are small tend to get clogged up over time. It only takes a small particle of dirt to get stuck in the hole and then you get a water pocket covering the rest of the hole and you have no flow. But normal cleaning will solve this.

Thanks for the response. The tray is 11" by 14" and the holes are laid out on a 1"x1" grid.

I like the idea of more matting if the holes are too big.

My drip tray is slightly bigger than yours and all my holes are spaced out 1 inch apart. I drilled the holes 3mm / 1/8" size and have a sheet of mechanical filter foam covering the whole area and it works great.

I agree. Start out with 1/8" and go bigger if you need to.
