Hi. I have a 120 gallon cichlid tank with an aqua clear 110 with 2 sponges, a haydor koralia at 600gph and a magnum 250 HOB canister full of ceramic bio media. I was looking at adding a surface skimmer to my HOB filter since its just bio and adding a sponge filter for polishing. My parameters have been ok with weekly 25% changes but I feel I could tolerate a little more filtration especially as my fish grow. While looking for the sponge and the skimmer I saw DRs Foster and Smith have there own filters in 350gph up to 75gal for 29.99 they have a built in skimmer and they also have media baskets you can just cut new floss to fit. Which I like the price of penguin replacements is absurd IMO (Its why I love aqua clear).

Does any one have any experience with the Drs foster and smith filters? If they flow a true 350gph I don’t see how this could hurt and its only 4-5.00 more. I would pull the magnum 250 off and use it on my hospital tank. Power consumption is a concern.

guess this means I should stay away from one then.

I haven't used that F&S filter, but I would just add another AC110. The savings from buying the $29.99 filter won't be savings at all if you have to replace it with something down the road anyway. At least with another AC110, you know it's a quality filter that will last, and you only have to worry about replacement media and spare parts for one type of filter instead of two.

I tried out those surface skimmers recently and I like them. The one I bought is Aquaclear branded, and it includes a fitting that's the exact size to fit on the end of the AC hob filter intakes. It looks pretty much the same as the one for sale on F&S, but that one appears to be a generic brand and may not include the correct fitting. One modification I made was to the adjustment screw that sticks out the top. It's attached to a plug that screws in the bottom. What I did was cut it off so it's not sticking out, cut off a few inches of length, and stick it into the plug from the bottom with some waterproof epoxy. Now I have to stick my hand in the water to adjust it, but it doesn't interfere with my lid.

thanks, I added one of the generic skimmers to my other tank, it leads down to a utility pump pushing through a canister I like it too. I never had surface build up but that tanks parameters did improve.

I was going to add the skimmer on the 250 since its stuffed with bio.

i was thinking about those too the pric is good and i love the skimmer

telll me how it goes!!

my magnum 250 only uses 11 watts. not sure about this one so I think I am just going to pass and add a sponge filter for piece of mind. I will be running a pump anyway on my feeder tank.

wow to revise an old post, I called Drs foster and smith yesterday and got power consumption for the oxy 75. It's only ten watts for 350gph so maybe I will try it at some point.

Throw in an FX5, you can never go wrong with those
