There's a contest going on at the popular pet supply website. There are 10 categories and 1st place for each category gets a gift certificate of $300. 2nd place gets $200 and 3rd place gets $100. Pretty serious money.

I entered a few photos there. Some I didn't expect to win but I was pretty sure some would have made it judging by the photos of the previous month. I'm pretty sure some of us here have sent photos in expecting to have a much better result than they did.

But really, what are the judges looking for in this contest? Looking at May's winner for Cats, I thought that 8th place was hands down the best out of all of them, yet it only got 8th.

Any thoughts from photographers?

Shumpei, it's a fish contest, not a photo contest. I dont know how they judge, if it's users voting or a panel of judges, but unless it's photographers, it's a matter of the species preference, cuteness or some other factor that has nothing to do with photography.

Also, while the prizes look great, the rules are pretty lopsided. Did you know they pretty much own your photo and can use it anywhere they like in print or digitally, without any pay to you, even if you dont win?

by entering the contest, Entrants grant Sponsor a perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free, worldwide license to display any submitted photographs, Entrant name and pet name on Sponsor website, in Sponsor product catalogs, and within Sponsor advertising and promotions without any fee or other form of compensation. Sponsor may make and retain copies of any submitted photograph for contest and archival purposes.

Here is what that means. They can give the prizes to whomever they want, and then use the good photos that did not win prizes in advertising by themselves and the sponsors they found for the contest. You just gave them for free your photos to use in ads in TFH and other magazines. Does not bode well for truth in voting in this contest.

Well, the photo contest might not be the best, but I certainly love the company and their service!

Yah... It was just so tempting because of the prize. Too bad. :-P. If only a company this big with money to spend could hire or ask one of you guys to judge for photography. Then we would see some GREAT photography. Like photos that won't make me as sad when I lose lol.

Shumpei, I actually did enter the contest with my 2nd best type photos, just to see what happens. It's an experiment. I dont recommend it for everyone, but I looked at the photos and made sure I had another one better than the one I entered for the same subject, and used the lesser one. We'll see what happens next month when they do the "judging". It's funny, you never actually see the contest or the judging process I guess, it's just done behind the scenes.

The photos I entered were pretty low res. web images. And if they ask I dont have the big versions of those available, sorry. We'll see if they win then :)

:-) Hey, Ed…did you get the “Big Cash” yet…!?

Would be nice to hear at least something like… “CHEERS!”

Well, I entered the contest, and waited for them to post results and they did on the 15th and I was not even in the top 10 :) :) with my low rez web shot which was a great photo. So either:

1. They did not want a low res photo because they can't use it
2. I am in the next month's contest.

Will know by the 15th, but I suspect only shots they can use in print are awarded prizes.
