Drunk Pleco

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Haha!.....what kind of pleco do you have?

IMG_4007.JPG It's a new tank, just finished cycling two weeks ago and I added the giant danios as dithers first, seemed fine and healthy so I figured good to go.

So algae was building up and I don't own an acrylic safe scraper (and I hate scraping) so I figured plecos were next. I got 2x albino blue eyed (super cool!) bristlenose. I am going to get 2 more green dragon BN my LFS has but he is still pH acclimating them slowly (his breeder shipped them in pH 5.5 water, our local tap water is 8.5).

Attached is the best pic I could get, no great size reference they are about 1.5". Water is nice and yellow with that new driftwood tannin look - no point in fighting it.

Those driftwood tannins may be pushing down your ph way below that 8.5. You may have a lot closer to 5.5 than your tap.

I think as some plecos get larger, some species raspy mouths will be abrasive and leave scratches on acrylic. I don't have first hand experience but have read about it on this forum and others.

Some people have had large plecos for years in acrylic tanks and never had a problem, others have had to repolish tanks, so your mileage may vary.

Ive been testing the water daily, mostly in case the cycle wasn't adequate (it is, 0 - 0 ), and the ph never goes below 8.5 or so.

And yea. Plecos vs acrylic is a hot topic. The "panaques", like a royal, will destroy it for sure. For a non panaque smaller one (bushies only get 5" or so) the general consensus is they are fine - or at least no worse than me scraping it myself.
