Dry socket

If it is a dry socket, you need to go back to the dentist or oral surgeon and have the socket packed. A dry socket occurs when the clot is lost, leaving the bone exposed. It is excruciatingly painful. Packing the socket will result in instantaneous pain relief. You may have to go back several times to have the socket repacked. How do you know it is a dry socket? Infection can also be very painful. Either condition is best treated by going back to the surgeon.

Iron Cat is right--dry socket paste does have eugenol in it (clove oil)

This is the stuff dentists use when treating dry socket

The dentist said I have dry socket during my post op appointment. Said all I need to do is flush it a few times a day. I am very aware how extremely painful it is, believe me. Also he will not givee any more pain meds.

I feel like ripping my own jaw off would be a pain relief.

He should have packed the socket with dry socket paste. You would have had immediate relief. Go back to him. Pain meds aren't going to help. The socket needs to be packed. Ask for a prescription for Peridex..its an antimicrobial rinse that promotes healing and secondary tissue formation. Pain meds including narcotics are not the answer for dry socket. No dentst expects their patients to suffer like you are, so go back, ask that the socket be packed and ask for Peridex.

Just had one of mine pulled and developed a dry socket. I went back and he packed the hole with medicated self dissolving gauze. It came out on it's own in about 3 days. He also have me a syringe with a fine point to keep to hole clean after I ate anything.

I had one. 800mg of Ibuprofen seemed to take care of it for me. That is, until the dentist put some sort of "gauze/patch" in the open cavity. That eliminated any/all pain. Not sure what it was, but it worked like a charm. Left it in for a week, then took it out.

EDIT: After reading Pacu Mom's post, it must have been that dry socket paste, although it looked like folded up medical tape to me.

No you are correct. It was iodoform gauze dipped in dry socket paste. What I didn't like about that is that the patient has to come back and the gauze removed and replaced (possibly several tines) until enough healing has occurred. That is really the standard treatment. I preferred using a resolvable packing material so the patient did not have to come back unless they were still symptomatic. Actually, I preferred not having to deal with dry sockets

I had 5 wisdom teeth removed early this summer. No drysockets ;) but I was horrified to get them. I went out that coming Friday, maybe 3 days later, probably not the smartest thing.Hope you get better soon.
