I have an opportunity to purchase 90 pounds of 'Live Rock' thats been drying sense january so probably not that 'LIVE' by now but its about 1/2 hawaiian rock and 1/2 fiji rock.

He is going to sell it to me for $150 dollars. Question 1. is that a good deal for dry rock?

2 how long will I need to cycle my tank if I add say another 10 pounds of cured or uncured live rock mixed in so it seeds the remaining dry rock?

Any other advice would be good.

I'm setting up a 100 gallon tank and 20 gallon sump.

anyone have any advice for me.

I'm confused as to whether I should buy this stuff.

I've heard that I can just add some LR and it will seed the rest, I've heard that can take up to a year. I've heard no you shouldn't do that.

I need some good sound advice I can trust and that is generally found here at MFK.

Thanks

you can but live rock and seed nonlive rock but yes it does take quite some time. if yiu're going to do that there is probablycheaper rocks out there but it does sound like a good deal. i would buy about 10-15 lbs of live rock but get little peices and spread them out over the live rock, it ill take less time to seed that way.

I agree. I would buy it and add some live rock to seed it. Live rock needs to be really porous to have more surface area for bacteria to live.

oh and it'll take a year(or so?) for the crystiline algea to spread but only a few weeks for the bacteria to grow. so the fish can live. but it'll be bare rock for a while.
