was wondering what the issues were with Nikon D40 and D60 cameras. i read on a different thread that people didnt think they were very good starter cameras. is it the lower megapixels or is it something else?

They're fine and actually quite nice for an entry level dslr but if you want the camera for shooting fish mostly, they lack commander mode found in higher end nikons. Commander mode allows you to fire flashes remotely above the tank.

You can easily get a D80 for the same money but with many more features that work well with aqautic photography.

That's not to say you couldn't accomplish the same with a D40/60, it just means you'll have to buy extra gear.

well i would be using it for other things as well as shooting fish. other pets, nature, pretty much anything else i see that would look much better with a high quality camera. does anyone have experience with the Canon Rebel XSi? i like the greater number of mega pixels compared to the Nikons of similar price. are there any major drawbacks with the Canons?

No drawbacks with Canons. It usually boils down to how they feel in your hands and whether you like the menu features and such. Canons do not have commander mode.
