Ok, my boss " the wife" has given me the ok to purchase a DSLR. BUT!!!!.....I can only spend $600-700.

"But only $700, and not a penny more!"

My question is, " coming from someone who's never owned a DSLR but has used a few many times"...which one shold I get? Nikon? Canon?...maybe even a Sony?...I've looked into mainly those three metioned above. Its seems to me that Sony a300 and a350 comes with more bells and whistles than the Nikon D40 and Canon Rebel XSi in that price range.....

I would like it to have somewhat a nice lens besides that crappy one it comes with. I want to be able to take pictures of people, places and maybe some close up shots.

I am very excited and don't want to rush into purchasing one that I will eventually won't be happy with....so with the little time I have before I do, I want to know why you have your camera and are you happy with it.

Remember I can only spend $700 MAX and not a penny more.

Please let me know what you think.

Thanks in advance!

i love my XTi. it has a few less features than the 40d and XSi but is cheaper. keep in mind, its the lens that will help make the pictures better, not the body. you can find a body for about $400 and spend the rest on a nice lens. if you're interested in canon check out http://photography-on-the.net/forum/

I think you will be happy with any of the three makes; just go for the best deal you can find. Remember that each brand has its own proprietary lens mounts, so if you someday decide to upgrade to another body, you will probably want to stick with the same brand so you can keep using your old lenses. Canon and Nikon have historically had a better selection of lenses than Sony/Minolta, but that gap is shrinking or may even be gone by now.

Get the Cannon, Xti (10.1mp) body alone runs about 500 (599 for the kit) Xsi (12mp) is a bit more, about 70-80.00 for the body. Friend of mine has a D40 (6.1mp) and really likes it too. Those are a little bit older then the two cannons, but takes equally nice pictures.. at sites like amazon, you can get some great deals on kits for the D40 w/multiple lenses. the newer cannon models have em also, but not as cheap. Nikon's D80 (10.2mp) is similar to the Cannon and may interest you some. I've used both and find the cannon a little easier to use. Again, look for kits to save some money, at Amazon, ritz , Cameraworld or even Newegg.. you really can't go wrong w/either of those two brands.

Go to circuit citys close out sale the nikon d80 with 18-100something lense is going for $620 or you can easily get a new D60 for under $700

I have a d60 I would get it over the 40 as it has a few more feature you might want. I LOVE my D60 lol. I can get just as good shots as the people with better models then mine. Its all about who is behind the camera.

I looked at the XSi and the D60 when I was looking but decided on the D60 for some of the features it had. I dont know much about canon so I cant say much there. Just go for what you like and how it feels when you hold it, etc.

Here is a few photos off my D60: (sorry a lot are of my best friend Jo. I was helping her build her modeling profile). The one of the moon I took last night.

The moon and civic photo was taken on a 55-200mm and the rest were on 18-55mm which is the lense it comes with

The civic photo I also have on my 18-55 but the one I posted was my fav out of them all. The 18-55 is not a bad lense if you can figure out how to apply it. A lot of people told me they dont like it but I did my friends modeling photos with it and I think the came out great on that lense.
