I stopped in a Circuit City today to just browse around for a new monitor. To my surprise, in the digital camera department were Canon 20D and Nikon D70s. It seems to me, just a few months ago, that Circuit City just carried the more popular point and shoot dig cams.

DSLR is making the big jump into the mass merchant market. Not just the www resellers, but the neighborhood box stores.

With that said, we should see a robust interest in DSLR photography. The average consumer is going to see that a $1,000 plus price tag for a new camera is the place to be in the digital camera circles.

P&S are going to become the pocket calculator in the photography business imo.

gosh, the circuit city around here was carrying the 10D when it first came out, as did the circuit city up in maine

compusa carries the 20D and rebel XT, although no nikons at last check.

It's definitely changing, Costco has a whole dept. now, I have seen D70, 20D, the whole olympus line and a few Canon lenses. People are now more willing to spend the $$$, everywhere you go, you see more and more people with DSLRs, shooting on AUTO :) :)

I got my D70 at Best Buy last year. They had the 20D and some lenses for it too, but the D70 lenses had to be ordered.

The stores around here have always sold $1,000+ cameras. My parents spent that much on their Sony back three or so years ago, and that was a "point and shoot." No matter how popular DSLR's are getting, I still get more people asking about recommendations for the $300 range than anything else. I think compacts are still going to be the staple in the digital industry for a while because most people aren't looking to be making ginormous prints with excellent quality. Most people I talk to are looking to do nothing more than go to a camera bar or DKPM kiosk and make low-quality .29 prints of their friends and family. It's not satisfying to me or anyone else on this board, but it is for Jo Shmo. Moreso now with the Kodak Easy Share's with the printer combo for what, like $200?

Yeah, what's up with that? Why spent that much on a camera and then not even bother to learn how to use it properly? You might as well just get a $200 point and shoot. I can't count how many times we've gone to the zoo or anywhere else that is a camera haven and have seen tons of 300D's, 350D's, etc, and they're all on auto! It's like soccer moms with SUV's! What gives!?!?!

Ya'll really don't want to know what it is like to sell this stuff. really. I've got many a story

Also, one of the effects with the DSLR marketing maturing. As technology advances it brings down the cost of owning. Really amazing that you can pick up a price of the entry model DSLRs for the price of what some of the mid to top end point and shoot cams are going for.
