This winter I am going to be constructing a 16' long 1000gal aquarium. I was wondering what people who knew more about filtration than myself thought about this idea.

Since I will have tons of room under the tank, I was considering dual sumps instead of one bid one. Redundancy is good?

That would be fantastic :headbang2.

You've got a great opportunity here, 2 six foot sumps could keep the water crystal done right.

Plumb them so they can be hooked together to share water after a certain level should one have a blockage.

Why so long of a tank, you like rope fish?;)

2 six footers. Would that be a big advantage over 2 4 footers? I was just thinking about using an 8 foot acrylic sheet. I guess I am asking is it length or volume that matters in sumps?
Sounds dirty but it is not.

Nice thread-jack

I don't see any real advantage in two sumps besides the fact that two six-footers is probably easier to do than one twelve-footer. And since you mentioned two four-footers, why not make it 3.

Actually, I just realized, and correct me if i'm wrong, but two sumps might be dangerous. The overflows would have to be exactly even as well as the pumps because the wrong sump could fill up. Does that make sence. It does to me, but it's hard to explain. I guess If the sumps were connected like the doctor said, it could solve the problem, but then again... why not just have one sump. If it's just a really big sump, the water will get just as clean as with 2.

So I guess my answer is... If two sumps will allow you to provide more filtration, go for it but be careful. And if you can just go ahead and make one big one, you should bcause in this case, redundancy doesn't matter.

I do advocate the use of dual or even quadrupal overflows and more than one pump though.

Was that long enough for you?
