So I've decided to breed again and picked up a 14 inch proven breeder female marble and a 15 inch bd female for my 14 inch bd male a few weeks ago. I would like to pick up 1 more female and maybe 1 more male for the 600 gallon 8x4x2.5 and have been planning ahead. I ordered 2 ....45 gallon reef ready rimless tanks 48x18x12 for future pups and maybe add on some other small stock projects.. these tanks will be holding tanks after the newly born pups spend a month in the sump tank I have for them attatched to the 600 gallon .... the tanks will be on a double stand with roughly a 30 gallon sump mostly with mechanical filteration and some bio and will be using 2 ehiem 2217s as returns filled with bio media... I already had both from past tanks over the years and thought i might as well use them instead of spending money on a return pump. The top tank will be fed by one of returns from an ehiem 2217 which will overflow into the lower 45 which will also be fed by the other ehiem 2217... which will feed down to the sump.... both ehiem 2217s intakes will be in the sump. I plan on splitting my carbon drip system thats dripping into my 600 gallon into both the 45s as well... dripping roughly 24 gallons per day total with the gravity waste water drain being in the sump. This should give me roughly an 80% water change over the course of a week.

My question is does any experienced keepers see a problem in this set up?

I ordered rimless tanks bc i like the overall look better but am concerened with pups wall surfing and ending up on the floor..... as a solution I thought I would get custom glass pieces cut to make a euro brace around the tank to keep them from jumping out. This would still give the clean rimless look with an open top without risking the health of the pups

what width would you go with for the eurobrace?....

I was thinking 3 inches but not sure if I should go wider.

I would be leary of using the canister filters as return pumps. Where both tanks are draining into the sump, and one filter returns to the upper tank while the other filter returns to the lower tank, I wonder if you will have issues with different flow rates into each tank? The output for each filter will not be the same due to different head heights and gradual clogging of bio media. Probably easier to get one return pump pumping water from the sump up to the top tank and gravity feed back to the sump.

Rimless tanks are nice, but I would have gone with regular tanks for this application. Now you have to get glass cut and attached to the tanks.

Ehiem 2217 have valves on them to adjust flow just like you would need to on a return pump so there's actually no diffrence there...... it's all one system so the more flow circulation throughout the system the better..... also each overflow will be able to handle a lot more flow then 2 ehiem 2217s so i won't run into the issue of any of them overflowing .

.i could just add both return lines to the top tank but i think i would get more flow the original way i had it

All the mechanical filteration will be in the sump so there will be a higher flow in each of the ehiem 2217s due to not having sponges and not being able to clog easy.... i know the way i have it aet up sounds weird but with 2 canister a sump and at least an 80% wc a week

I went with rimless bc it was only $10 more per tank ..... I dont mind going to the local hardware store and spending a little extra on thin glass for a lip.....

I think it would of cost me more to get the framed 45 gallon frags bc i would of had to buy 2 sets of full lids anyways

Seems like it would work fine. For a little extra peace of mind you could even pick up some polycarbonate greenhouse cover and set it on the 45's. The double wall stuff is ridged and can support a small weight to hold them down. Helps with evaporation too. I doubt the pups could get past the 3" lips, but wouldnt hurt anyway. Looking forward to seeing this set-up in action (full of pups!)
