I always thought that duckweed was a guaranteed success in any tank...but whenever I try to grow it in my inground pond in the yard, it barely survives, if at all. All my indoor tanks, and my outdoor stock tanks, require constant thinning...and the great part is that thinning duckweed is essentially the same as removing fistfuls of nitrate and nutrients from the water. It's also a great addition to the recipe for any homemade gel foods that you might want to try out.

Giant duckweed is my favourite, looks a bit less like surface scum than the smaller variety. I love the stuff!

Duckweed is illegal to sell now in Aus

I can see their point, as they want to prevent its introduction as an invasive...but, really, who the hell actually sells or buys duckweed? It just arrives as a single leaf or two with other plants or fish, and takes off from there.

Of course, it it were in Canada, they would simply ban the keeping of any and all aquariums to prevent its introduction. Good thing for you that Australia isn't that silly...are they...?

I'm sure that Canada has considered combating Covid-19 by making it illegal to exhale...:(

I find duckweed is a very nice addition to my planted tank. Really amps up the natural look, provides surface cover, and certainly helps me achieve the undetectable NO3 of said tank.

Surprisingly though, even though mine isn't dying off, it's not multiplying either (maybe because of that undetectable NO3). I ought to get some more from my local classifieds, and hopefully the fish that will be added to that tank will provide enough nitrogen for it to multiply madly as so often told.

Azolla is great! Definitely a plant for the monster pond!
I started a set up to produce a lot of duckweed as there was demand in my area, and then a month later became illegal to sell. Lets just say my turtles enjoyed duckweed for a while
