Silly question but I have two 40 gallon trash cans that I keep filled and that way when doing water changes each week on my large tanks it’s ready to go. Is it ok to keep a lid on these trash cans or will that hurt the oxygen? Does it matter. I always keep the lid cracked but it falls off sometimes and is annoying, so if it’s no issue I’ll just leave it on there sealed. Thanks.

Why? Do you have something in there using up the oxygen and a complete lack of airation in your tanks?
Unless you're hoping to let some chlorine offgas from it, if anything it's better to keep it them sealed.

Sometimes the water in your storage container becomes stagnant even if only held for less than a week. You can add an air stone or water mover to keep it circulating to avoid this issue.

I didn't have an issue keeping the lid on my Brute trash can since it wasn't air tight but the water felt a bit slimy after a couple days so water movement helped.

Is there any particular reason you are storing water and not filling the tank directly using a Python or hose?

No nothing is in the trash cans just water and prime. And yes my tanks have aeration. Each has two FX6s and an MP40. Just wanted to avoid a potential issue.

I just fill the trash cans a day or so before a water change with cold water and let them come up to room temperature. I have a 240, 300, and 400ish gallon tank down there and can’t justify using hot water on large changes.
