any body keep these guys, ive been reading up on them lately and they seem pretty cool

I have, they're great. Mine was very calm and "deliberate", not jumpy like some of the Asian/Indo monitors you see in the shops. Very strong bite, you DO NOT want to be bitten by a dumerili...they eat mollusks and crustaceans in the wild and have strong jaws. Mine ate mostly rodents with occasional insects and fish. They will climb a little, give them some low wood to climb up on, but more important is deep substrate as they love to burrow. They don't need a swimming space, but they enjoy soaking, and mine always crapped in the water pan. Also recommend wetting down your substrate for added humidity.

I gave mine 80F ambient temps, 90+ on the hot end with a maybe 105-110 basking spot; if the spot was any hotter he didn't use it. I used a crude Retes stack type basking platform for him and he often hung out under it. He lived in a 8x4x3 enclosure and that seemed to be plenty big enough.

thanks for all the info, what size was yours when you got it, how long did you have it, and how big did it get? sorry for so many questions :grinno:

He was about 2' when I got him, maybe 42" when I gave him away. This was over about 2 years time...I thought he'd have gotten a little bigger but he sat in the shop for awhile and maybe that stunted him?

I don't have him anymore :( Had to give up all my monitors and big snakes back in maybe '03? I want to get back in but really don't have the proper space right now. Considering ackies or another smaller species...

hypotheticly, if i were to get one of these, how does this sound as a diet:
50% crustaceans
30% insects
10% fish
10% land based vertebrates

That's a natural diet, probably better than what my guy got...I don't think you need to do the seafood but if you want to go for it. Might improve their color, the way krill is supposed to do for fish.
