Okay so my question is how does the little hole on top regulate the water level?

I've read that if the hole is too little it creates too much siphon and sucks the water too fast and creates a gurgling noise when it reaches the bottom inlet of the elbow

If the hole is too large then the suction is too slow and causes a high water level.

This leads me to think that after awhile, either the water will go down and create a gurgling noise or the water will be too high and overflow the tank?

Never though about putting a valve on the top of one, cool idea.

As far as the water level, the hold does not regulate that. Water level is controlled by the height of the durso, specifically the height of the bottom-inner portion of the 90* & the "T".

The hole in the top allows air to enter and lets the durso breathe so that it does not siphon, but just overflows.

Oh I see now it makes more sense hehehe.

So what happens if no hole is present at the top or let's say it's almost completely shut?

What also happens if the hole is too large? Does it just make more noise?

Yeah, the hole lets it breathe, too small and it won't flow a whole lot. Too big and it might be pull too hard and be a bit noisy.
