Are you talking about a built in overflow in the corner of the tank, or one of those hang on back overflow boxes? Standpipe would work in the first instance, not sure about the second.

I've also wanted to know this. I bet they will work fine. I'm not sure how long the pipe needs to be for it to properly work though. Going to be building a hob overflow soon and I may experiment with this.
