Hello I have constructed a couple of "hills" made of lava rocks in one of my tanks. I was just wondering if I sporadically tied the baby's tear to different lava rock on my mounds if it would eventually grow together and cover all of the lava rocks or do I need to cover the whole thing initially?

Here's a photo of the rock structures...

It will grow and cover by itself, as long as you provide nutrients and light, I'm sure. I've been trying to get some to experiment, but it's hard to come by here.

Baby tears are very demanding plants, they require a lot light in combination with tons of CO2 submersed. I think you may have a better chance to grow the baby tears to cover the lava rocks emersed.

Hmmm... it sounds to me like the dwarf baby tear may not be the proper way for me to go to cover the mounds as I have a Bichir and I am am almost positive that whatever lighting is being put off is about the limit for him. I can't say how much light that is exactly...I have two 18" florasun florescent bulbs, the tanks is 55 gallons, and despite the fact that I have not added any CO2 I have gotten plants to grow quite well in it. I suppose that my set up probably does need to be changed a bit. However, I have grown very vibrant ludwiga ad well as dwarf hair grass in my tank with little problems. That being said, I am not against the addition of CO2.....

Now that I think of it, it maybe preferable to wait until I have another 55 to work all the details of the initial try out in. If I had the time to let the some Aquarium Silcione cure I could possible form some caves for the bichir to chill in to avoid the bright lights I will need to grow the baby tear.

SO, I guess my initial question is currently useless and even the formation of the hills would be best to put off until i can do it right. In the mean time I can study up on lighting and buying some light fixtures that are not crap.

Thanks chonhzilla and sorry for such an odd response.
