Would be in a standard 40 gallon, have a DG a black molly and flat head minnow (odd bunch i know) I used them too cycle my wolf tank before he arrived and I didn't have the heart to let the wolf sort them out so I moved them to a 20 gallon storage tub with a heater and a aqueon 30 gallon filter. Now I kind of want a bit more of a community tank and I was wondering what dwarf/small cichlids that would be compatible with my current lineup.

Any dwarf cichlid should be fine. Rams would be nice.

Dwarf gouramis tend to be mid water and surface dwellers, especially if you provide them with floating plants as cover, while most of the new world dwarf cichlids prefer lower levels of the tank, with lots of lower plant cover. So yes if you arrange a tank in that 2 tiered manner, you should be fine.
