I'm planning for my new 40 to be a planted tank that is "almost jungle" probably wont be full jungle feeling, but lots of plants nonetheless. so are dwarf cichlids like kribs, or apistos okay for a community setting with like tetras and guppies, etc...? if they are, can you give me some good species that would be fit in a tank of this size? Thanks

Kribs can be on the larger side for dwarf cichlids (others like rams and apistos max out around 2-2.5", I've seen kribs twice that size), so you might want to be careful with them if they pair up and start breeding, but for the most part, you could probably get away with a couple dwarf cichlid pairs in that tank with other community fish. My favorite are blue rams closely followed by several apisto species.

My 20 long has 4 apisto triple reds, 4 red wag platys, 2 fancy guppies,2 zebra danios and a oto catfish. Its heavily planted and everything is fine so far

i would go with any kind of ram. I have 3 german ram, bolivian ram, and a golden ram in 29g planted tank.

I've kept Keyholes, Bolivian Rams, Blue Rams, and Apistos in planted community tanks and all did fine.

apistos will be awesome

rams or laetacara would do very well in a 40G planted, and would not be a problem with the other fish you mentioned

might want to consider adding some small loaches - - maybe zebras - - to avoid any possible snail problems

I have a german blue ram in a community tank with cardinals, a neon blue dwarf gourami, guppies, and some otos and he doesn't bother anyone. He's actually the most peaceful fish in the tank. The gourami sometimes bothers him, but that's b/c the gourami is highly energetic.
