Hey-

Help me out guys, I have always been a pike fan, but have always had them outgrow any tank I had, Can you folks help me out with some info on the:

Dwarf Pike - Scientific Name: CRENICICHLA COMPRESSICEPS

Like size, agression, possible tankmates??

Thank you in advance for any help you guys can give me!

Cr. compressiceps, one common name ~ 'green pike'. Really nice small pike, some variants have more coloration. Should be OK in a community tank - maybe geophagus, small to medium size C A cichlids. Pikes seem to be more tolerant of tankmates if introduced as juvies and grow up with other fish. Some even are more comfortable being in a tank with other fish, sort of like a distant early warning system, in case of danger.
Jim Ellenberger - MainlyCichlids.com (San Jose) currently has some in stock....

Crenicichla compressiceps in an awesome pike indeed. It will stay small, and can even be kept with some of the more robust characins (tetras). There is also Crenicichla regani that is often offered for sale. As was noted, there are several color variants of each species, each one being equally attractive.

If you are wanting a larger pike, yet not one that will out grow your tank, try to find some fo the Saxatilis group pikes. They still get large and robust, but seldom exceed 12". Crenicichla sveni, Crenicichla lepodita, Crenicichla anthurus, and Crenicichla proteus are just a few examples...;)
