I'm not the best person to talk to, but I think that you might want a little more water volume before you try a predator. a 12 gallon tank is just really small. I don't even think that it's big enough for the fish anyways really.

They are territorial but should be ok if kept in species only with lots of plants and decorations. I think they burrow, I have heard they do and don't so be safe and get a sand substrate. Diet should be frozen bloodworms, snails, krill, and brine shrimp, I think you can get them to eat flakes too.

They are fully fresh water, they often mistaken for green spotted puffer which are brackish. They get to about 1 inch and will not get along with most fish, I have heard otos or cory cats go good with them though. They are messy eaters so good filtration and gravel vaccing often is ideal.

(puff puff) lol :nilly:

well pufferpunk and grooveitude in the PUFFER forum are best to talk to but here this might help

1) freshwater... a lot of people will say they're brackish, which they will survive in.. but not as long.. they do best in freshwater.. as for pH make sure its between 7.0 and 8.0 these guys are extremely sensitive to change in water quality so make sure your pH doesnt rise or fall rapidly and clean clear water is essential.. with a 5g tank you will need to be doin water changes prob twice a week and checking pH every other day

2)5g for a dwarf is the bare minimum, 10g would be much better.. even though these guys grow to only like an inch long, they swim around a lot and are very active..

3)they're very territorial and need a lot of dense plants and caves.. if you have two, they will not live in constant view of each other so hiding places is crucial

4)deff no other fish besides the dwarf in a 5g.. these guys are very aggressive and will attack any species of fish besides their own, even if the fish is much larger.. if you got a 10 or 20 gallon tank you might be able to throw some otos in there, but dont be surprised if you find them chewed up and dead

5)there are several different common names for dwarf puffers but they are all the same species.. these guys pretty much all look the same.. theres no different color variants but you might find some with slightly different patters or brighter or darker coloration

i dont know what else to add, soooo. Oh DP's dont burrow like other puffers so any substrate would be good. Definitely do not try 4 in a 12g. Maybe 2 would work, because they are extremely active and curious. Heavy decorations with lots things to break line of sight. yeah thats all i got right now..

Dang I am Jelly, I really want 3 of these but cant find them in Kansas City.

Pufferpunk's knowledge is FAR greater than mine on all puffers. She is the administrator on The Puffer Forum! :)

As for the dwarf puffers, here is a link from The Puffer Forum. Hope it helps.

Good link, it explains sexing DPs which is god to know, since keeping 2 males will be a problem.
