Hey i just picked up a cycled 5g Hex from a friend and i really wanted to put a Dwarf puffer in there, ive read a little bit about them but i was wondering a couple things...
1) They are freshwater right? Would a slightly higher Ph be better??
2) Ive heard recommended 3g per fish... so would 5 be good for one?
3) Are they ok with live plants? I was gonna trim out some of hornwort and stick in there?
4) Would it be ok with an oto or two? i hear thats about all they're good with
5) Are there different types of dwarves? Ive heard of like Pea puffers, lemon, spotted, a whole bunch of names but have only found one Species name for it.... are they just color variants like the difference between say a Ryukin, Moor, and Fantails (goldfish)??

just thought i'd add my tank is the Marineland Eclipse System 5g hex... just so you know what filter is on it..... anyway thanks for the input.... when i get some haha. goodnight

1) freshwater... a lot of people will say they're brackish, which they will survive in.. but not as long.. they do best in freshwater.. as for pH make sure its between 7.0 and 8.0 these guys are extremely sensitive to change in water quality so make sure your pH doesnt rise or fall rapidly and clean clear water is essential.. with a 5g tank you will need to be doin water changes prob twice a week and checking pH every other day

2)5g for a dwarf is the bare minimum, 10g would be much better.. even though these guys grow to only like an inch long, they swim around a lot and are very active..

3)they're very territorial and need a lot of dense plants and caves.. if you have two, they will not live in constant view of each other so hiding places is crucial

4)deff no other fish besides the dwarf in a 5g.. these guys are very aggressive and will attack any species of fish besides their own, even if the fish is much larger.. if you got a 10 or 20 gallon tank you might be able to throw some otos in there, but dont be surprised if you find them chewed up and dead

5)there are several different common names for dwarf puffers but they are all the same species.. these guys pretty much all look the same.. theres no different color variants but you might find some with slightly different patters or brighter or darker coloration

also dwarf puffers have no scales and very sensitive skin and love to burrow, therefore they require a soft sand substrate, preferrably dark, otherwise they will shred themselves up

overall you should be fine with your 5g with some hornwort in there, just make sure you stay on top of the water quality

All good advice but DPs do not burrow.

1) They are freshwater right? Would a slightly higher Ph be better?? Totally Freshwater!
2) Ive heard recommended 3g per fish... so would 5 be good for one? I guess you could put at least a pair of dwarf puffers
3) Are they ok with live plants? I was gonna trim out some of hornwort and stick in there? They need live plants/debris to disperse agression
4) Would it be ok with an oto or two? i hear thats about all they're good with - It depends on the dwarf puffers temperment
5) Are there different types of dwarves? Ive heard of like Pea puffers, lemon, spotted, a whole bunch of names but have only found one Species name for it.... are they just color variants like the difference between say a Ryukin, Moor, and Fantails (goldfish)?? check this site i think you can check the other species of dwarf puffer the Carinotetraodon travancoricus and Carinotetraodon imitator:
