do dwarfed cichlids about 9 months old have the potential to reach a respectable size if under new (normal) conditions? A friend of mine had an overcrowded 65 gallon tank full of different species and he passed away and i was given them.
sorry about your freind yes they still have time depends on which cichlids 9 months isn't to long in crowded conditions they shouldn't be to stunted most dwarf cichlids don't get over 4'' so it depends on what you mean by respectible size
are you ready for this,? he had 4 demps,4 severums,4 multispinosa, 4 parrot fish(i only kept one) 2 green terror with red orange fin edges, 1 geophagus(nice!) 4 koi angels, 4 silver dollars, 1 blue demps, 2raphael cats, 3 pictus, geo ,congo tetra, 3 tinfoil barbs, more, and the tank was a show. wait ,also a nice firemouth that died before i got there.
WHOAH. Hardly dwarfs. He must have had a pretty nice sump to keep all of those guys alive. I bet it looked pretty awesome. After 9 months the big guys (demps, severum, GTs, etc) ought to be about 5-6 inches. Are they all 9 months old? They should still have some time to stretch out a few more inches if given adequate room.
whoah is right, i forgot to mention i know they are dwarfed because i got the same severums and demps at the same time he got them, and they are at least twice the size length and girth, you know, we got them in the beginning of june and they were an inch and 1/2 then now mine about 4 and his about 2 and 1/2 , his demps are males mine are fems.
by dwarf cichlids you don't mean actual dwarf cichlids you mean dwarf as in "growth stunted" right?
Yes you can grow them, they are still pretty young. You reach the danger of growing them more when they have crooked spines and growth defects from lack of space, but they don't sound too stunted nor are they too old.
I have heard more rediculous claims like a guy who wanted a 125 for his single jack dempsey that was 8 inches, and he told me it would get over 14 inches even though it was already 10 years old. He kept it in a 30 gallon and it was "really aggressive". Man I had a hard time convincing that guy that JD's really aren't that aggressive, it was just in way to small of a tank (he went by the petsmart tags) and there was absolutely no way it would grow to 14 inches after 10 years.
your right, that is what i was trying to say , growth stunted, thanks for explaining and advice . yeah that jak demp would never grow to 14 inches that is willfull ignorance on his part, but this could be fun bringing these along, i guess i will have to remove this thread it is titled wrong by my ignorance.
