dyeing parrot cichlids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Dip them in a slightly acidic solution to remove their slime coat, then in the dye they go from what I understand. It's pretty stressful and most don't make it.

Its wrong.......

i aint doing it i saw it before and was wondering how they did it. it does sound stupid though i thought they couldnt live without a slime coat

They dip them in the acidic solution, then whilst out of the water they inject colours under thier skin with a syringe. After a few injections which may take 45 seconds, they put them in the solution and or tank water again, and repeat the process untill it had finished. By that time 3 in 5 fish die from this within the next 2 weeks.

The dye wears off in 3-4 months. I've also heard of 'Dyeing Stations'. Were people bring in thier fish to be dyed, come pick it up later and pay the man some cash.

This pisses me off, and I make sure my LFS managers know exactly what they are selling each time I see one in the stores. I think this shouldn't be supported by chain stores... but it's hard to control small stores... they sell them at fairs here with horoscope symbols on them, and even pot leaves.
