Here in Hawaii, we have alot of different types of volcanic rocks and one in particular we call cinder is very light, and very pourious. It's easy to clean and it's seems to be a good candidate for bio media. Does anyone have an opinion on this? Has anyone done this before? I'm going to experiment with cinder and run water quality test, but I figure put it out there and see what people say. Thanx in advance, Aloha.

I know what rock you are talking about. Its not lava, it looks like coals in a fire, it has a grain to it, right?
That stuff is very good as bio, however, it does tend to crunbble and make dust/particals that can get into the filter/pump impeller.

Thanx for the feedback. I asked a friend who works @ the lfs, and he said he does. I should of just checked with him to begin with. I know that some people spend hundreds of dollars on just bio media itself, so when I'm surrounded by material that I can use that cost me nothing to get, I'm happy.
