dyi overflow questin, yes another one

For that setup, a water/flow check valve would not be needed.

Are you speaking about an air check valve?

as long as the loop outside of the tank stays full of water an air check valve shouldn't be needed.

The airline check valve in the top loop allows for a convenient way to prime it and to keep built up gasses bled out. That design is low flow only and has a difficult time expelling the gasses on its own. They won't start to build up for the first six months but after that you will have to bleed it progressively more frequently.

how low is low? I only need 600gph

Actually "low flow" is pretty subjective. The right size pipe will overcome any challenge. That design doesn't flow as well as the other one, but that can be fixed. You'll just need larger pipe. 1.5" pipe will do nicely for your application.

hey just thought i'd chime in. although i'm not currently running this, i built one of these types. i would most definately add a way to remove air. you can just run air line up the intake to the top and suck it out if you really don't want to actually add a check valve.
this makes it a hell of a lot easier to prime, in fact i wouldn't dream of trying to do it by dipping and trying to keep the water in it while its hooked up

i don't really understand the difference between flow b/c i never built the other type. didn't want all that pipe in my tank and wanted a mid level drain. mine flowed great for the short time i had it up, and its really easy to add more overflows for redundancy anyway w/o filling your tank with pipe:D

Chompers: i am stoked you put this type in your sticky! i spent months researching and asking ?'s about it only to be shut down most of the time:(. i have some plans in the works that i would like to run past you some time since you seem to have this piping thing to an art.
