Hey guys, I was thinking of how to do an indoor pond at my father-in-laws and while looking for ideas online and came across this...

Now my questions are: is it doable? will it hold? what all might go into building this? any ideas or comments from all of you DIY experts?

Thanks...

Nik

Would be a PITA to seal. Gotta seal all the cement keeping it together without losing the glass effect unless it could be built with silicone instead. Not sure if it is feasable. Great idea just seems like more work than it is worth

It can be done very easily. There are two types of common systems to lay glass block. The first and most common is with mortar. In this case just use a mortar that has a waterproofing agent in it. The other is they make a plastic strip that locks all the blocks in place and you use silicone to seal it up.

I do believe that the pond in the picture has the water line below the glass block which mat be due to the block may not be able to support the load of water filled to the top.

I'd say its definitely doable as most glass block windows around here are made with silicone. That said not sure how deep you would be able to go, and it would e alot of silicone

Would be a pain to clean.
Grout/Mortar is a terror to clean I had a tile/grout shower. With Wavy glass block like that it might not be worth the work to build and clean. Clear/Flat glass block would be better. Why not use regular cinder blocks and constuction mortar for most of it and then where you want to see in use flat glass block for "windows". And seal the cinder block, bottom and glass block grout lines with liquid rubber, mentioned elsewhere on MFK http://www.liquidrubber.ca/ You'd have to have all this on a concrete slab of course.

I'm sure someone has tried this already and the results are out there. You may even find someone has made a bathtub/hot tub out of these glass block. Just keep searching and good luck.
