I'm so sorry I didn't do this sooner. I read on here about people making their own filter socks, so I decided to give it a try.
I have 2 sumps (not that big) first one acts sort of like a refugium, second one houses my heater and has a built in overflow to allow a 24/7 WC.
Anyway, I've installed socks on both sump inlets and my water has never been so clear. It's practically invisible.
I wanted to thank everyone that posted their experience and ideas.
Thank you!
Pat

Did you actually make the socks yourself? What fabric did you use? How many microns? What was the total cost per sock?

Yes I also made my own made 12 for like 5 dollars, but if you don't have a sowing machine you will need to use stichwitch thermal bonding seams which is another 2 -5 bucks.

No way to tell the micron rating, all I can say is that, they are larger then the 200 micron filter sock I bought, and they clog up in one day, just like the 200 micron sock. So they must be close to this rating. Dang messy fish keep clogging up my socks.

200 micron isn't bad. I like to run 100 & 50s on my setup. I like that crystal clear setup.

same here, 50/100 in my sump. if i could find felt that you could actually tell what the micron rating is, i might make my own. but untill then, im willing to pay $3 each!

I'm rally thinking about trying out the 100/50 two-in-one bags. Same price for the bags overall, without having to mess with pulling them apart to wash.

I use paint strainer bags and don't remember the micron rating. They're the standard bucket-size nylon bags at any paint store. They take awhile to clog, so probably 200 micron or larger on them. Clear enough for me and my fish, though.
