Hi about a week ago i had a baby festae die he/she was about 1.5" it got really fat suddenly and stopped eating and it's mouth seemed to be popping out? What is this i assumed bloat and it died within less than a week. I thought it was gone and that was the end but now one more has it and assumed another they are getting fat one got fat overnight and mouth popping out and another one's mouth is popping out breathing heavy and starting to blow up. I included a video for better help. The ammonia is 0 ph is 7.0-7.5 (looks closer to 7.0) and not sure of the nitrites and nitrates atm but i just did i big water change on saturday. I don't want them to go they are my babies i got them at .5" in november and the only festaes i've ever seen in my area. What could it be help please. all fish are about 1.5" heres a video and i know there probably gonna die soon if i don't help I'm assuming bloat

Alright thanks but that one festae is the only one that has it. The first one that died (in the pic didn't have it) and the other one that is fat and puffy mouth doesn't have it either just that one.

Sorry for your loss, but how much did you pay for each one? I have seen these on other threads and i really want one now.

Well first off, im sorry for your loss. second you really need at least a 55g or larger to grow them out successfully. And a member on here R.D. has a thread posted about bloat/hexamita. try using the search engine to find it and yes there are a few ways to treat bloat. I would personnaly upgrade your filtration and add more oxygen to your tank ie, airstone or sponge filter along with your filtration. keep tank around 80 degrees. there is a medication called cloat which is very potent!! but i recommend buying epsom salt and use 1 tbls to 16oz of water, the mix that up and use a little at a time to soak the food in. once food is soaked feed only what can be consumed. try to feed them at least twice a day. but if they only eat once then its ok cause at least theyre eating. dont really bother adding aquarium salt as its not needed in this scenario. also until you can grow them out a lil more i would say try keeping them with other tankmates that are of the same size. add a background to your aquairium to:) and keep your tank out of a high traffick area. you will need to treat for at least a week then try feeding only flake with veggie matter to assist their digestive system then you should be ok to feed normal diet again:) good luck bro. If you know a guy name Ruff R ( Perry) he lives in Vancouver, anyway try hooking up with him cause i can ship him some of my festae fry and he can send them your way:)

Also with the tank your currently using, you dont have to do huge water changes, i say try smaller but more frequent changes. the large change in a tank that small will only stress them out and add to the bloat.

@andy i paid $5 for each

Thanks. Well i was just moving them up and up. They were going to go in a 30 next week then a 70 and then i was going to sell off the bunch and keep one and i had them at .5" and they are only 1.5" so i dont want them in a huge tank yet because the filtration and watter flow may overpower them. They were moving along with me. I had an airstone in it a couple days ago but i took it out for cleaning, which was also the reason for the big water change i was doing a good cleaning of filter all the glass ornaments and gravel so yea.. Thanks for the advice i was actually going to look for medication to do that but thanks for the brand :) and epsom salt i am going in a couple days for shopping of fish stuff so. also thanks for the offer but i'm going to hold off on getting more fish until i have this situation under control. Thanks for everything much appreciated

Sorry to hear about the little ones. It's good that you cared for them a lot and I hope you are successful next time.

Just to let you know, it is not good to clean filters and have a big water change(+vacuumed gravel) at the same time because this takes out all the beneficial bacteria for the fish, which causes the tank to cycle again. Some fish are hardier than others but these babies weren't tough enough. It is safer to clean the filter first, wait at least 2 days before performing a water change and vacuuming the gravel. Too much of anything is not good, in this case, cleaning.

I hope this helps!

Yea they were my babies :(.

Oh really, well the filter cleaning wasn't really good cleaning just cleaned off the algea and brown build up in the tanks own water (that I syphoned out into a bucket) and left the media out of the cleaning. But thanks for the advice.
