Over the last few years I've bred and raised a ton of cichlids here at my house. My routine is always the same: 20 gallon bare-bottom tanks, newly hatched BBS several times a day for food, daily water changes with aged, temp-matched water, and the fry grow like weeds.

Starting at the beginning of the year, a lot of my cichlids began spawning again after a break during the winter. Since then, I have tried to raise about 5 groups of various fry from severums, geos, etc. and they all die, a handful at a time, until there are none left.

Nothing about my routine has changed. At first I thought it was a water issue, but I currently have a batch of Geophagus parnaibae fry that went free-swimming yesterday and I'm seeing deaths already without having done a water change yet.

The fish do not start dying until they actually start eating. For instance, I stripped the Geo fry from the adult fish and the wrigglers stayed in a net breeder in this 20 gallon tank for four days before they went free-swimming. In that time, none died. Now, after their first brine feeding yesterday, I've lost maybe 5 or 6.

It sounds crazy, but all I did was buy a new can of brine shrimp eggs. They look and hatch like normal BBS. Is it possible something is wrong with them? I didn't get them from Brine Shrimp Direct, which is where I usually buy, but from an angelfish vendor who is reputable. I'm sure he and his customers are using cans from the same batch.

I don't know what else to try. First I thought I had a bacterial problem or flukes, but I sterilized the tank this time before the fry went in and used a sponge filter from the parents' tank to ensure it was seeded and healthy. I also don't get why they don't die until they start eating.

Has anyone ever had something like this happen? Is there something I'm overlooking that I should check for? I'm about to start tearing my hair out!

That's a head scratcher. I wish I had an answer for you.

The only thing I can think of is to set up two tanks and feed the fry different foods to see if that narrows it down. Give tank A BBS and tank B first bites and see if the mortality rate changes. That's about all I can think of at the moment.

Yeah I had that happened to my Jewels too. I think moving them from parents is bad, because I noticed momma Jewel was sucking them up and spitting them out as to clean them. Once they are moved then no more cleaning

Do they just die, no swollen stomachs, swimming problems.......are the fry from always from the same pair?

I think it's the new brand of foods, try using crushed flakes and first bites untill u can get the BBS you used to use. Keeping the fry with the parents a little longer won't hurt either unless they're eating the fry of course. But my guess is the new food u have is bad or something since everything else you do is the same

I may try that with the next batch. Unfortunately, some of these have already started dying, so I'll have to start fresh next time with two tanks for a true test.

I've been pulling fry from all types of cichlids for the last decade. I've never had this happen just because they're away from the parents.

No, it's been at least three different species, and it's been different pairs. One is a pair of Atabapo sevs that came from jgentry, and he successfully raised fry from them multiple times, so I know it's not an issue with the pair.

They are very tiny, so it's hard to see if they're different. It looks like they all die swollen with their mouths open, but that could be something that occurs after death. I did notice that on some of the ones who made it to a week or 2 old, they started to kind of dart around and seemed to have clamped fins. This lead me to believe something was irritating them. But it's batch after batch, and I've used two separate tanks on different occasions, etc. So I don't know why suddenly this is happening.

It's interesting to note that the severum fry that I left in my main tank lived for a few days before my pike cichlids found them. They don't seem to die off in the community tank that I can tell... but I don't feed them the brine either.

I do have some First Bites but I have never used them. I may try that and see how it goes. I also had some decapsulated brine shrimp but my fish don't seem to eat that well. Maybe I will have better luck with the First Bites.

I'd leave them with the parents if possible, but all my adult pairs live in community tanks and the fry get eaten as soon as they go free-swimming. I did attempt setting up a breeding tank for my geos and separating them, but they were extremely skittish and stopped spawning. Two days after moving them back into the community, the male had a mouthful of eggs. Go figure!

Thanks for the replies!

They definitely eat well. At first I thought they were eating too well, so I cut back a bit on the amount I was feeding. But twice a day or four times a day, it's still the same story.

Just a little update... I haven't fed any BBS in almost two days. I've been exclusively feeding First Bites. I haven't lost a single fry since then.

I also haven't done a water change yet. At this point, I'm afraid to...
