I had two die on me today and one last week. The one that is left is strong as an ox and developing nice colors. Does anyone know if they are nitrate sensitive? PH levels are normal but not sure about my ammonia levels.
Blue and Gold Rams (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi) are quite a sensitive fish. You'll need to adhere to their recommend water parameters if you want them to do well.
Invest in a complete test kit before you purchase more fish.
i have a pair of gold rams and a pair of blue rams. they are extremely sensitive fish and you definitely need to keep your water params in good shape for them. yes, i think in order for them to flourish, you have to check your water atleast twice a week. i test my water every two days. get the API master test kit, that gives accurate readings.
Instead of agreeing with japes and Neervana about being sensitive (which they deffinately are) I'll go the temp route. These fish come from very high temp water, mine never did well at temps under 84F/29C. Collection data usually lists the water at 28.5-30C and even higher depending on the time of year.
