Ello. A neighbor of the facility that i work at approached me today with a question about his fish. he has a very large pond approximatly 20' x 100' not sure how deep. over the last few days he has noticed that around 50 of his sunny's have died. I to have recently noticed the fish in the lagoon at my plant acting odd. I ran tests on his water and everything looks ok. the nitrates are only 1.5 mg/l and I got a dissolved oxygen level of around 5.8 mg/l. THe fish in my pond were skimming the surface even with a large airator. After opening a gate to allow for water exchange my fish have all seemed to have returned to normal. Any advice for the neighbor?

is their large abundance of algae, and how is the turbidity and temperature. The pond may be stagnant and maybe suffering from large scale decomposition of algae sucking oxygen from the water. Plus the summer heat can warm up the pond and with turbidity, temperatures can get even higher. In addition, where was the oxygen sample taken, it would be best to take it around a foot under the surface.
Also by opening the gate, you may flushed out the stagnant water.

Thanks alot for that info. I too had the same problem and I did a water change and it stopped. I will stay on top of the waterchanges in my pond now thanks.
