So, when I came home from work last night, this is what I got to put in our tank!:DDSCF4701.JPGDSCF4702.JPG
Now, the big question I have is, has anyone found out why Scombs die after 12"? I know that there has been some speculation as to whether or not we are giving them everything they need, but honestly, I know that some of us go all out for our fish. Granted, we are not mother nature, but some of us go all out for these guys and it's strange that no matter what, they seem to have an expiration date. I will be documenting exactly what we do for this one- our feeding regimen, and wc regimen, and we will be putting up our water chem so our experience can be used to help get to the bottom of this.

To start out, this guy hasn't eaten anything yet, and he was only fed feeders up to his current size (6-7"), so we will try tilapia and shrimp for a couple days, and if that doesn't work, feeders it is for a while.
His tank is an old 130 with two 12-14" FL Gars and one 14" Lima. Filtration is two 400's and a megaflow 3 sump with scrubbies and bio-balls and a QO 3000 return. There are also 2 powerheads- Hydor 550 and a marineland 660 for keeping the overflow primed.
So in short, quite a bit of current and he hasn't had any trouble yet and was actually quite sociable after only 20 minutes in the tank.

Whew, I'm done now, but I have been so excited for our first payara and I think we've done our research enough to keep this one healthy and can add our experience to the MFK community!

Mine eats silversides, or salmon, that's thinly sliced and I let it fall in front of his face... he will lash it while falling. Once fallen, it's unlikely he'll pick it up off the floor. I've noticed that my tatuaia eats off the floor, but not my scomb. Never fed him a single live fish. He's around 7".

Scombs are great fish. Evil looking, plus a nice dark metallic color to them. They also have crazy regeneration abilities. I had a bigger fish take a couple chunks out of his flesh and tail... and it grew back in perfectly as if nothing ever happened. Quite amazing fish.

Happy birthday!

Good luck keeping that guy. He looks tough! Seem like he enjoys the plants, too. How big is he?

This guy is only 6-7" in. So far he hasn't eaten anything. We have only tried shrimp and I will try tilapia tonight and bust out the fishing line to see if I can get some prey drive to come out. Our water reads 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, and 30 nitrates. It's water change day so that will go down. So far so good. He's super low key in the tank and there haven't been any problems with him spooking the gars. Not too active during the day, but when I got ready for work this morning at 5 he was all over the place.
p.s. Anyone know how to quiet down a quiet one pump lol!

Mine lived 2 years and 2 mo. was 12" and just lost all equilibrium then died - why no one really knows. We can only speculate that perhaps the breeding instinct kicks in and the fish requires perhaps different currents or tempature or diet or companionship or even perhaps a release of eggs. Some animals migratory insticts are so increbibly dominant we can't provide for them. But once again it's all just guesses.

On that note one thing is certain, numerous MFkers have tried to keep this animal only to find out Scombs live only 2 years in captivity - enjoy him while he lasts.

ticking time bomb..... Better get an armatus

Agreed, I just got myself one recently and he's great. Took over a week to break his feeding habits though.

Wasn't there some post with a vid of some exhibit somewhere with some beastly looking large scombs? I thought I saw one, but then again, an exhibit tank is generally bigger than a home aquarium...
