I recently got a 10ish inch tiger oscar and he has a couple areas on his head that I am concerned about. He has a couple of areas, that aren't really holes or pits, but almost look like a velvet covering which I have heard is an early sign of future hole sites. He is in a 55 gallon with an emperor 400 for filtration. water params are 0 across except nitrates which sit right above 10. No tankmates. I have had him for 2ish days so I am sure this is something that was caused by his previous tank. I have General cure (250 mg metronidazole and 75 mg praziquantel per 10 gallon packet) but I want to know for sure before I begin the dosing process. I have attached a pic and hope that someone can help me shed some light on the situation. Oh the rub mark on his lip is from a log in his previous tank and it is already looking better. unnamed2.jpg

No, I think the combo of crappy cell phone quality and the reflection of light off my sand bottom just makes em look lighter than they are.

No, I use a little purigen. the tank he came from had a carbon insert i believe. 50% water changes weekly. Usually on Sunday's but he got an extra one this morning.

It may be from the carbon in the tank before yours but if you can don't use the purigen either for awhile and just do the water changes and see if it seems to get better. The carbon from before and the purigen now may be triggering the hexamites to start the HITH. That what I would do. No carbon or anything like that for me in years and I've had no HITH... Just water changes, bio media for bacteria and sponges.

HITH is usually caused by poor water quality, so start with keeping the nitrates below 20ppm.

By far the best advice on this thread. Don't bother with chemicals and just feed high quality pellets and keep water changes frequent and robust.

Alright, purigen is out. I will do 2 50% water changes a week and see if he improves. I am hoping that I am just being paranoid and it and it will clear up soon.
