Here&There
One of my super-skittish silver dollars scraped some of its side against something while swimming and so sports a somewhat serious scrape. The wound is whitish looking, not red or pink. It doesn't seem to be very deep. The white color of the wound is somewhat alarming. Doesn't look fluffy or fuzzy. Could be normal. I have been lucky in that this is the worst injury one of my SDs has ever suffered. I have some familiarity with signs of fungal or bacterial infection from books, but the pics I have seen are late-stage. What are the very first signs of trouble? Is the white color maybe a good sign- that the wound isn't deep? I don't want to treat unless necessary, but I also don't want a dead fish.

I'd just add a teaspoon of table salt per gallon to allow the wounds heal quickly without the bacteria attempting to latch on the wounds.

Will do. In general, how common is infection of moderate to minor injuries on otherwise healthy, robust fish that live in very "clean" aquariums?

I agree, just add some salt, that should heal it right up.
